By now most of us have heard of a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS). A PSPS is when the local energy company turns off the power to an area that is in danger from extreme weather conditions or wildfire. During a PSPS ALL customers serviced by the affected power line will have their power shut off. Could Palo Alto and surrounding communities have a power shutoff? Yes, planned shut offs and unplanned power outages are always a possibility.
For people with medical, physical or other challenges, a power shutoff or a power outage can also represent a risk to your health and safety especially if you depend on any electric medical devices such as a power wheelchair, ventilator, home oxygen, dialysis machine or refrigerator for insulin. The following website gives more information on PSPS and can help everyone prepare for planned and unplanned power outages: https://prepareforpowerdown.com
September is National Preparedness Month. We encourage everyone to develop a safety plan and if you use electricity and/or battery dependent assistive technology or medical devices we encourage you to download and complete this checklist to help ensure your safety and ability to maintain your level of independence.
