Connecting People to Meaningful Projects Since 1977

The notion of older adults volunteering their time in the community was a novel idea in 1977. However, Avenidas knew that this group had not only the time but also the talent to help others, so the Avenidas Volunteer program was launched.

Today, Avenidas has over 350 active volunteers who contribute a total of 19,500 hours of service annually.

To volunteer through Avenidas, contact Jyllian Halliburton, Director of Community Engagement, by email, or call

  • Avenidas Early Literacy Program (ELP)
  • Avenidas Friendly Visiting
  • Avenidas Rose Kleiner Center
  • Senior Planet @Avenidas
  • Avenidas Village

Volunteer drivers for Avenidas Door to Door use their own cars (mileage reimbursement available) to provide much-needed transportation to the aging population along the Peninsula. We provide rides Monday – Friday between 8am-4pm.  We also schedule and monitor Lyft rides as needed for clients.

For those who like to work with children, tutoring with the Avenidas Early Literacy Program is a wonderful way to spend time, helping kids not only improve their reading but also grow in confidence.

The Avenidas Friendly Visiting Program matches volunteers with seniors in need of checking in or companionship with a weekly visit. This program helps to foster community and bring support to isolated seniors. Some training is provided by Avenidas staff.

Avenidas Friendly Visitors also deliver the bouquets created by the Avenidas Blooms volunteers.

Rose Kleiner Center gardeners

Volunteers at the Avenidas Rose Kleiner Center can help Activities staff throughout the day assisting with scheduled arts and crafts, gardening, or sewing class in the morning or afternoon, helping staff with lunch set-up and clearing, or socializing one-on-one with our wonderful participants.  Volunteers can also provide musical entertainment, lead a specialized art or craft session, or any other activity based on expertise and interests.

Teach a technology class for Senior Planet @Avenidas! Senior Planet always welcomes engaged volunteers of all ages and interests. There are four different roles that we see volunteers filling at the Senior Planet @Avenidas. Because we have a limited staff, these roles may overlap at times.

Avenidas Village, our aging-at-home membership program, thrives on having volunteers change light bulbs, flip mattresses, handle odd jobs in members’ homes, or assist with medical appointments.

Most volunteer positions for the Avenidas Village Program do not take place at Avenidas but rather in people’s homes, doctor’s offices or driving.

Avenidas welcomes student volunteers! We love to have inter-generational volunteering for people of all ages! The hours for our events work well for student schedules and you can receive course credit for your time.

Volunteers also help with our multicultural program by assisting staff with events and translation. We welcome bilingual volunteers in Mandarin & Cantonese to help with many events!

The Benefits of Volunteering

The benefits of volunteering can be enormous, as it can reduce stress, combat depression, keep people mentally stimulated, and provide a sense of purpose. It also offers vital help to people, causes, and the community.

The right match can help people find friends, connect with the community, learn new skills, and also help protect their mental and physical health.

I tutor as part of Avenidas’ Early Literacy Program and I feel such a sense of purpose being able to help young kids become readers.
