Avenidas Named Awardee of Stanford Community Partnership Awards

February 5, 2022

For almost twenty years the Community Partnership Awards have honored partnerships between Stanford and our region that work to tackle real world problems and advance the public good. Awardees are selected based on initiative, leadership, and results that embody co-created partnership and benefit our region.

For more than four decades, Stanford faculty, staff, and students have supported and collaborated with Avenidas programming including the Rose Kleiner Center, Avenidas Care Partners, Avenidas Chinese Community Center, Volunteer Corps, and Door-to-Door transportation. During the pandemic, however, the deep foundation of this relationship allowed both to quickly pivot to meet the sudden and unprecedented needs to care for hundreds of older adults and their caregivers with programs for frail and disabled seniors, family caregivers, monolingual Chinese, and older adults seeking social connection. Avenidas and the Stanford WorkLife Office supported family caregivers through phone consultation and online resources, including guidance and advice for Stanford employees, retirees, and students.

Campus caregiver groups provided support and built community among neighbors. In the deepest moments of community need, “Operation PPE,” a joint project with Avenidas and Stanford, mobilized in an effort that collected and distributed almost 22,000 units of PPE to local long-term care facilities. The diverse and ever-adapting programs over the past two years has demonstrated how long-term relationships can improve response for the public good.

Downtown Palo Alto Farmers’ Market Donates $25,000 to Avenidas in 2021

(Palo Alto, CA, Dec. 20, 2021–) The Downtown Palo Alto Farmers’ Market board celebrated its 42nd year serving the Palo Alto Community by approving a $25,000 donation to Avenidas for 2021. The Downtown PA Farmers’ Market got its start back in 1980, thanks to initial seed money and assistance from Avenidas. Since then, the Market has donated nearly $650,000 to Avenidas.
“Our special relationship with Avenidas is more important than ever, as seniors suffered the most economically from the COVID-19 pandemic, so the Market is happy to make this important investment in our local community,” says Robert McDiarmid, Downtown Palo Alto Farmers’ Market Board President.
“Avenidas is so grateful to the Downtown Palo Alto Farmers’ Market for their unwavering support and generous donations each and every year for the past 42 years,” states Avenidas President & CEO Amy Yotopoulos. “These types of gifts allow us to expand our services when needed to help more people in different ways , especially during the global pandemic,” she notes.

The Downtown Palo Alto Farmers’ Market is held on Saturdays on Gilman Street in Palo Alto. It is entirely volunteer run and is a 501c3 non-profit. For more information about the Downtown Palo Alto Farmers’ Market, visit their website at www.paloaltofarmersmarket.org.

Avenidas, which started in 1969, is also a 501c3 non-profit, providing programs that keep older adults in the community active, safe and connected. For more information about Avenidas, visit their website at www.avenidas.org
