“Until you’re really in it, you don’t realize how much time and energy is needed (for caregiving). A lot of family caregivers don’t have the ability to take time off to take care of their family, so any support we can give them financially or even the gift of time through respite is (necessary).”

The Palo Alto Avenidas Chinese Community Center is holding an event on Wednesday, May 22 to celebrate the fifth anniversary Avenidas Chinese Community Center and also celebrated the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and to honor volunteer teachers.
The center is dedicated to creating a supportive and caring community for older adults, providing a wide range of information and services to help them stay active and independent.
With the support of many volunteers over the years, two volunteers who have served over 3,000 hours were recognized at the event: Andrew Chang, who teaches the BaDuanJin for health, and Ingrid Lai, who teaches Cantonese.
Another founder, Bill Friedman, who was honored, talked about his connection to the Chinese community.
“In high school, my best friend was Cantonese,” Friedman said. “50 years later, he’s still my best friend. His mother was like a second mother to me, and his father taught me how to cook Cantonese food. I fell in love with the Chinese.”
Erica Yew, the first Asian American female judge in Santa Clara County, was invited to be the keynote speaker at the event. A special report of Judge Yew will air on our station on the following week.
