Family caregivers will learn how to let go of hurt, helplessness and anger while increasing confidence, hope and happiness.
Hear about a unique mindfulness-based approach to supporting family caregivers. The presentation will focus on three key
areas: the relationship between mindfulness, resilience and well-being; the practical application of mindfulness as a beneficial
intervention for caregivers; and the methodology used in Mindful Caregiver Education.

“Legal Matters: Pro-Active Planning”
Liza Hanks, Attorney
Attorney Liza Hanks will review critical legal documents to help you honor your loved one's health care wishes and financial resources. This
includes durable powers of attorney, living wills, trusts, and senior's legal rights.
“Caregiving for Your Immune System”
Dr. Merhdad Ayati, Geriatrician
Statistics now reveal that many dedicated family caregivers become ill due to stress and exhaustion. Dr. Ayati will discuss strategies for boosting
your immune system by enhancing your sleep, diet, exercise, exposure to sunlight and taking time for yourself.
“What to Expect When Calling 911”
City of Palo Alto Paramedics
Paramedics will guide you through placing a 911 call and discuss best practices for working with paramedics during their physical exam of your
loved one. They will review critical documents to have available if patient is transported to the emergency room.
“What About Me? — The Importance of Caregivers’ Needs and How to Meet Them”

It is common for caregivers to ignore their physical and emotional needs. The session will address the various stressors of caregiving, including
family relationships, finances, and the changing needs of your loved one. You’ll come away with a better understanding of the conflicts that arise,
and will better be able to manage and optimize your self-care.
“Communications at the Crossroads”

Are you having difficulties setting priorities and mediating family conflict? Learn strategies to help you cope with a loved one who is in denial and/or
resistant to accepting professional support and guidance. This session will teach communication skills that help you move forward while dealing
with variable cognitive and physical abilities.
“Don’t Go At It Alone: Navigating Resources for Higher Levels of Care”

Speakers will present pro-active strategies for helping family caregivers recognize when it is time to obtain professional counseling, home care support,
and adult day health care. You’ll learn about payment options, range of services, and how to access respite services.
